On Interruption

Why a studio named after a gap believes the pause is the most honest part of play.

A hiatus is a break in continuity — a place where the expected structure fails and something else becomes possible. We named the studio after that place on purpose.

Games are very good at momentum. They are engineered rivers: objectives feed objectives, numbers climb, the current carries you. What games are rarely allowed to do is stop. The pause is treated as a failure state of attention, something to be patched over with a quest marker.

The case for stopping

We think the interruption is where the player actually arrives. The moment the music drops out and the evidence does not fit — that is when a person stops performing progress and starts thinking.

Our games are built around those fractures. Not as punishment, but as sanctuary: a held breath the game protects instead of filling.

Keep calm and breathe. The gap is not the absence of the game. The gap is the game.

That is the wager of the studio. This blog is where we will keep testing it in public.
